Family chore chart: everyone helps, kids included
In many families the housework ends up with one person, usually without anyone deciding it. A family chore chart shows everything that needs doing and shares it so that kids take their part too, matched to their age.
Collect first, then assign
Sit down together once and write down everything that comes up in a normal week, including the invisible parts: sorting laundry, packing lunches, keeping track of appointments, buying presents. Only when everything is on the table can you see who carries how much.
Then split by effort, not by count. Cleaning the bathroom is more work than watering plants, even if both are one line on the chart.
Age-appropriate chores
| Age | Chores that usually work well |
|---|---|
| 3 to 5 years | Tidy toys, put laundry in the basket, set out cutlery and napkins, water plants |
| 6 to 8 years | Set and clear the table, make the bed, unload the dishwasher, pair socks, feed pets |
| 9 to 12 years | Vacuum, take out the trash, hang laundry, help with cooking, tidy their room |
| 13 and up | Clean the bathroom, do laundry, shop from a list, clean up the kitchen after meals, mow the lawn |
This is a guideline, not a standard. What matters is that a chore is clearly described and doable for the child. One small chore that reliably gets done beats three that start an argument every time.
How to keep the chart going
- Attach chores to routines: clear the table after dinner, tidy the room before the weekend.
- Keep it short: for kids under ten, one or two small chores a day are enough.
- Rotate the unpopular ones: trash or dishwasher in turns, so nobody feels it is always them.
- Make done visible: a check mark on paper or in the app is often reward enough for kids.
- Parents are on the chart too. If only the kids have chores, it feels like a punishment. If everyone is on it, it is teamwork.
Rewards, allowance or points?
Whether chores are tied to allowance is up to each family. Many keep them apart: basic chores are just part of family life, while extra jobs like washing the car or clearing the basement can earn something.
Points by effort show without money that cleaning the bathroom counts for more than watering plants. See how to split chores fairly.
Start on paper, stick with it in the app
For younger kids a chart on the fridge they can tick off themselves is ideal. Our family chore chart template creates one with your names, ready to print.

At what age can kids help with chores?
From about three, kids can take on small chores such as tidying toys or putting napkins on the table. The chore should be short and clear.
How many chores are right for kids?
Primary school kids usually manage one or two small chores a day and one bigger one a week. Teenagers can own whole areas such as laundry or the bathroom.
